Transmission loss
Transmission loss is electricity lost, mostly as heat, as it travels through lines and transformers between where it is generated and where it is used. Losses rise with distance and with current, which is why power is carried long distances at high voltage.
It is a physical loss and is distinct from commercial losses such as theft or unbilled supply, which Indian reporting often groups with it.
It is one reason generation close to demand, such as rooftop or captive plants, can be worth more per unit than the same output from far away.
