Validation and verification body

A validation and verification body is the accredited third party that checks a carbon project. Validation happens before the project starts and examines the design and the methodology. Verification happens afterwards and examines whether the reported results actually occurred.

The two words describe two different moments and are often used interchangeably, which causes confusion when a project says it has been validated and a buyer hears verified.

The body is accredited by the standard the project is registered under, and its reports are usually public on the registry.
