Carbon and credits

Registry

A registry is the public database that issues carbon credits, records who holds them and records when they are retired. Each credit carries a serial number, so a buyer can trace a specific tonne back to the project that produced it.

Because the record is public and serialised, a claim can be checked by anyone without asking the seller for anything.

Registries also hold buffer pools, credits set aside across projects as shared insurance against reversal.
