Scope 3 emissions

Scope 3 emissions are those produced by a company’s suppliers and customers rather than by its own operations or the electricity it buys. For most companies they are the largest share of the total, and the hardest to influence directly.

Scope 1 is what a company burns itself. Scope 2 is the electricity it buys. Scope 3 is everything up and down the chain around it.

Because scope 3 sits outside direct control, progress on it usually comes through supplier choices and through removal purchased against what remains.
