Carbon and credits
Buffer pool
A buffer pool is a reserve of carbon credits that projects contribute to but cannot sell, held by a registry as shared insurance. If a project suffers a reversal, credits are cancelled from the pool to cover the loss, so buyers are not left holding a claim that has been undone.
Every project pays into it, and the contribution is set by how exposed that project is to reversal. Standing forest contributes more than durable storage.
It is the mechanism that lets a forestry credit be sold at all, given that a forest can burn. Without it each buyer would be carrying that risk alone.
