Native species
A native species is one that occurs naturally in an area rather than having been introduced. Natives are suited to the local rainfall, soil and pests, so they need less support once established and they feed the local insects and birds that evolved with them.
They typically grow more slowly than introduced fast growing species, which is why both appear in a layered block: the fast layer earns, the native layer lasts.
Species choice is made per site from local records rather than from a standard list, because what is native a district away may not be native here.
