Offtake

Offtake is an agreement by a buyer to take an agreed quantity of what a project produces, whether power, gas, pellets or carbon removal. Contracted offtake is what allows a project to be financed and built before the first unit is produced.

It shifts a project from selling into a market to delivering against a commitment, which changes the risk for everyone involved.

It is the reason the revenue lines on a site are chosen around buyers who already need the product.
