Anyone considering funding us, leasing land to us or contracting us should be able to confirm that the company is real, find it on the public register, and know who is accountable. Publishing these details is the cheapest credibility available and a surprising number of organisations in this sector skip it.
Funding policy
We publish this because the source of an organisation's money determines what it can afford to say, and anyone relying on our assessments deserves to know where ours comes from.
- Commercial revenuePrimary
- Sale of carbon removal, biomass, gas, crops and advisory services. Intended to cover operating costs so that the company can make long commitments without annual fundraising.
- Grants and CSRCapacity only
- Accepted for establishing new capacity, which carries the highest risk and the slowest return. Not used to cover salaries or running costs as a standing arrangement.
- DebtAgainst contracted revenue
- Raised against contracted offtake rather than against projections, so that repayment does not depend on a market that has not yet formed.
- Foreign fundingRoute disclosed
- Any foreign money is accepted only through a route that is lawful for this entity at the time, and the route used is disclosed. Where a proposed structure requires a registration we do not hold, we say so rather than working around it.
Indian law governs how a company here may receive foreign contributions, and the applicable route depends on the nature of the payment and the age and registration of the entity. Rather than describe a structure we may not be eligible for, we will confirm the correct route for a specific proposal before accepting anything. If the lawful answer is that we should be an implementing partner to an entity that already holds the necessary registration, we will say that.
How we avoid doing harm
Land based projects can go wrong in ways that hurt people who had no say in them. These are the rules we hold ourselves to.
- Consent is informed and documented
- Every lease is explained in the landowner's language, with the term, the rent, the obligations and the end of term condition stated in writing before signature.
- No displacement of existing use
- We do not take land that is currently supporting a household's food production, and we do not seek land where grazing, collection or passage rights are in dispute.
- Water is not taken from the commons
- Establishment water requirements are assessed against local availability. Where meeting them would compete with drinking or agricultural supply, the site is not taken.
- Local employment first
- Planting, protection and maintenance work is offered locally, at wages stated openly, with payment records maintained.
- Grievances have a named route
- Anyone affected by our work can raise a complaint by writing to [email protected]. Complaints are acknowledged and the outcome is recorded.
